There’s not much to write here except that I will reveal to you lucky readers the best secret I have found in Toronto thus far - Iruka Sushi.
Located on Toronto’s western Harbourfront, you might walk by this restaurant and pass it like you’d pass any of the other handful of Toronto sushi restaurants. But make this your destination - this place is a proper hole in the wall! A hidden gem!
I have quite a history with sushi in Toronto. I remember back when I was in high school, All-You-Can-Eat sushi was a huge deal. My friends and I would go out on the weekends to different sushi restaurants in the city to get the full All-You-Can-Eat experience, which basically entails stuffing yourself until you’re uncomfortably full and short of breath.
Eventually I learned that this wasn’t fun. I didn’t really enjoy sushi anymore because A.Y.C.E usually takes away from the quality of the sushi and would make me feel sick in my stomach afterwards. I lost my taste for sushi for a while, in addition to going vegetarian, but after some time rediscovered my love for it - this time with the preference of quality over quantity.
So I’ve had a lot of sushi in the city, meaning a lot of spicy salmon rolls (my very favourite). Iruka’s spicy salmon is by far my favourite, but all the food here is delicious and affordable. It’s not a night out at a ritzy restaurant, but if you’re good with humble sushi with a friend or two in an unassumingly great spot, this is the place to go.
