I’m not one to hold grudges but I don’t think I’ll ever be able to forgive my mother for throwing out my beloved beanie baby collection. If I had to pick one definitive toy that defined my childhood, it would be Flip, my big white cat beanie baby. I remember my best friend had a cat beanie baby just like mine, except it was black and white and was called Zip. Beyond that, I had at least a hundred beanie babies in my collection. Some of them I had inherited from my sisters who were too cool for the toys but most of them I had gotten myself. I remember going to the shops with my mom, which as a child was a painful experience. My mom loves to shop and she loves to take her dear sweet time in a store. Now that I’m older and also like to go to the mall, I’m more patient, but as a young child who hated clothes shopping, I was a disaster. Sometimes I would cry to get her out of the store (what a brat). Sometimes, if I was well behaved, I would be rewarded with one new beanie baby. So, considering I had about a hundred, you can tell we went shopping a lot.
This video talks about the insanity that was the Beanie Babies fad of the 90’s. It’s pretty crazy, but fascinating.
